Bethany Caruso, MPH, PhD

Joint Principal Investigator
Dr. Bethany Caruso is an Assistant Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. She is a social and behavioral scientist with over a decade of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sectoral research experience in low and middle income settings. She employs mixed methods approaches to understand how compromised WASH conditions impact physical and mental health, behavior, education, and empowerment, with a specific focus on girls and women throughout their life course. Dr. Caruso is also interested in how water and sanitation environments can impact the practices and behaviors that women perform because of their sex or are expected to perform because of their gender—including menstrual hygiene, child and infant feeding, and the safe disposal of child feces—and how these behaviors and practices may impact varied health outcomes.

Sheela Sinharoy, MPH, PhD

Joint Principal Investigator
Dr. Sheela Sinharoy is an Assistant Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. She has approximately 20 years of experience working on global health and development programs. Her research focuses on the nutrition of women and children, especially in relation to: agriculture, food systems, and food security; gender, empowerment, and social inclusion; water, sanitation, and hygiene; and household air pollution. Her work has a strong focus on inter-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approaches, program evaluation, and implementation science, to identify "what works" to improve program effectiveness. Methodologically, she is trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods. Dr. Sinharoy's research spans across Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific.

Madeleine Patrick, MA, MPH

Senior Public Health Program Associate

Madeleine holds a Master of Public Health from Emory University, a Master of Arts in History from the University of Georgia, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the MUSE team in 2018. She has experience in mixed-methods research, including qualitative and quantitative instrument design, protocol development, research ethics, survey training and implementation, and qualitative analysis. In addition to MUSE, she has worked on number of projects related to gender and WASH, including a review of gender-sensitive data collection mechanisms, research related to menstruation in the workplace, and formative research on the relationship between water and women’s economic empowerment. She has also worked on projects related to behavioral science and vaccination decision-making. Prior to her work in public health, she taught history and human geography.

Thea Mink, MPH

Public Health Program Associate

Thea Mink received her Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health and joined the MUSE team in 2022. Her research at Rollins focused on mixed methods process evaluations in both the WASH and food security fields, with an interest in gender and social inclusion. She is particularly interested in learning how stakeholders perceive their own decision-making in order to improve WASH program collaboration. Before attending Emory University, Thea graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Tufts University and worked in community-engaged development and state governance.

Tanushree Bhan, MA, PhD

Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Tanushree Bhan is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Hubert Department of Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. She engages mixed methods to explore her research interests in urban policy and politics, primarily in India. Dr. Bhan has worked in the Social Sustainability and Inclusion team at the World Bank, where she conducted research on social development issues including low paid-workforce participation among women. Dr. Bhan has also led research interventions designed to improve livelihoods, empowerment, and access to welfare programs by the poor in India at a leading policy-oriented research center in Delhi. Tanushree Bhan holds a PhD in Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, as well as a Master’s degree from the University of Mumbai and a Bachelor’s (honors) degree from the University of Delhi, both in Economics.

Shauna McManus, MPH

Data Analyst

Shauna worked on the MUSE project during her tenure as a graduate student at the Rollins School of Public School, She has continued to work for MUSE part-time as a data analyst, in addition to her other full-time work. Shauna was a James W. Curran Scholar in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, In addition to her Master of Public Health from Emory, Shauna holds dual Bachelor of Science degrees from American University in Public Health and Applied Statistics. Prior to coming to Emory, Shauna worked as a psychosocial oncology research manager for the Cancer Support Community, focusing on psychometric scale development.

Yuzhou Pan

Graduate Research Assistant

Yuzhou Pan is a first-year MSPH student in the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Department at the Rollins School of Public Health. Prior to studying at Emory, Yuzhou obtained a Honours Bachelor of Science degree at University of Toronto in statistics. Currently, she works with the MUSE team as a graduate research assistant.

Jamie Humphrey

Graduate Research Assistant

Jamie is a second-year MPH student in the Epidemiology department at the Rollins School of Public Health and concurrently pursuing a certificate in Social Determinants of Health. She recently graduated from the University of Maryland with B.S. degrees in Neurobiology and Public Health Science. She is interested in using public health informatics and infectious disease epidemiology to advocate for health equity and currently works on the MUSE team as a graduate research assistant for data analysis.

Negar Khalili

Graphic Design Intern

Negar Khalili is a graphic designer, UX/UI designer, and photographer based in Atlanta. Negar is currently studying Graphic Design and User Experience (UX) Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, GA. She is a visual storyteller, problem-solver, and creative thinker who employs her precision in visual communication.
